Analysis of the future use of (hybrid) bioenergy concepts for industrial heating in competition with other renewable energies as part of energy system modeling with BENOPTex
The project's primary goal is to support the transformation of the German medium and high-temperature industries by conducting detailed analyses and creating scenarios within an energy system model, with the aim of identifying economic transformation solutions. Additionally, it will identify industrial sectors particularly suited to transitioning to biogenic fuels from residual and waste materials, or those for which biomass is a short-term solution en route to electrification or PtX use. Specific quantitative and qualitative targets will be set for areas such as reducing CO₂ emissions, improving economic efficiency and ensuring technological feasibility, in order to make progress and success measurable. To this end, the industrial processes of the German medium and high-temperature industries, as well as possible renewable monovalent and hybrid technical solutions, will be mapped using a more detailed energy system model than has been used to date. The competition between different technological solutions and for limited biomass within the energy system will be mapped. This will cover the following areas: (1) meeting energy demand in difficult-to-electrify areas, and (2) using biogenic resources to generate negative emissions (BECCUS). Synergies arising from the capture of CO₂ and its use in industrial processes will also be considered. Various types of biomass (availability and costs) and bioenergy technologies will be presented in detail. Particular focus will be placed on analysing innovative hybrid concepts of biomass technology and heat pumps.
