Joint project: Development of a close to the market low-emission small-scale biomass combustion furnace for low energy and passive houses; sub-project 1: Development of firing technique (overall concept) and characterization of a small-scale biomass combustion furnace for low energy and passive houses

A considerable progress in the state of the art of small-scale biomass combustion is intended by the development of a low-emission, highly flexible and efficient small-scale firing system for wood combustion in the range of 1 to 5 kW. The design of a demonstration prototype with all necessary components is to be established based on scientific investigations of the combustion behavior and the fuel dosage for the small power level. Emission and efficiency values have to be comparable to the best state of the art values of commercially available small combustion systems with a higher heat output. The clear undercut of the legislative regulated flue gas limits is aimed by the achievement of a carbon monoxide concentration below 20 mg/m³, a particulate matter concentration below 5 mg/m³ and a volatile organic compound concentration below 20 mg/m³ (STP; related to 13 vol.-% O2). Comparable to good pellet stoves and boilers, the target is furthermore energy efficiency above 95 %.
