Job

Head of Thermochemical Conversion Department

Field of work

Dr.-Ing. Volker Lenz studied aerospace engineering at the University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich and energy management at the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt. Since 2008, he has been head of the thermo-chemical conversion department at the Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum gemeinnützige GmbH (DBFZ) in Leipzig, which deals with the thermo-chemical conversion of biogenic solid fuels for the efficient and demand-oriented provision of heat or cold and, if necessary, coupled electricity. All scientific and technical aspects from the provision and modification of solid fuels to the conversion plants and their control, flue gas cleaning and system integration are included.

In 2011, Mr. Lenz obtained his doctorate on the subject of "Fine dust reduction in the operation of log wood stoves under consideration of toxicological relevance". At the DBFZ, he is head of the research focus SmartBiomassHeat and is investigating the future heat supply from biogenic solid fuels on the basis of residues and by-products. In doing so, he is pursuing his vision of a flexible, resource-saving, grid-stabilising and low-emission heat in intelligent combination with all other renewable energy options. He contributes his expertise in renewable heat and emission reduction to numerous committees, e.g. as deputy head of the working group Wärmewende 2.0 in the 7th Energy Research Programme. At the Hamburg University of Technology he gives lectures on the integration of renewable energies.
