From Peatland to Product: Processing Peat-Biomass

Peat biomass from rewetted peatlands offers new raw material potential for bio-based value chains with concrete points of connection for the chemical, construction, paper, and packaging industries.

Priorities of Moor-Biomass Utilization & Marketing

1. Material characterization & Process adaptation

Peat biomass from lowland bogs (reed and sedge) differs significantly from conventional substrates. Together with Werner GmbH, the DBFZ adapts shredding, washing, and drying processes to produce a homogeneous, industrially usable fiber pre-product.

2. Demonstrationplant

Werner GmbH’s patented florafuel® process already exists as a pilot plant in Munich and is now being specifically tailored to the material properties of peat biomass. In the long term, the process is to be implemented on an industrial scale at Agrotherm GmbH in Malchin.

3. Application Development 

At the University of Bonn, initial material samples, such as fiberboards and paper products, are being developed and tested for suitability in construction and packaging applications.

4. Circular Economy

The DBFZ systematically processes process water and ash for material reuse, for example in the production of fertilizer granules.


The material data, process parameters, and test results developed in the project provide a solid foundation for integrating peat fibers into existing production processes as a new, climate-friendly raw material. This holds potential for companies in the construction, paper, packaging, and related chemical industries.
