Moor-Biomass from Wet Material to Valuable Raw Material: The Moor-Biomass Refinment Process

To transform wet Moor-Biomass into a high-quality, industrially usable fiber pre-product, the Moor-Biomass supplied by Agrotherm GmbH undergoes a multi-stage processing procedure at Werner GmbH in Munich: the florafuel®-technology.

Here’s how the process works:

First, the moor-biomass delivered by Agrotherm GmbH from Malchin is portioned out and fed evenly into the plant. In the first step, the washing drum contaminants such as sand, stones, or other impurities are removed. Excess water is drained off via a dewatering drum before the material is processed in the fine-grinding stage to achieve a homogeneous particle structure.

In the next step, a press dewatering process further reduces the moisture content of the peat biomass. This is followed by thermal drying, which brings the material to the moisture content required for further processing. Finally, the processed biomass is compacted and further processed into a dimensionally stable end product.

Why does the moor-biomasse need to be refined?

Originally developed for treating grass and leaves, the process has also proven effective for peat biomass. The high moisture content and variable material characteristics that distinguish peat biomass from traditional substrates can be specifically transformed into a homogeneous precursor product through a combination of washing, shredding, dewatering, and drying steps.

As part of the MOOReturn project, Agrotherm GmbH, Werner GmbH, and the DBFZ are jointly adapting the process specifically to the properties of peat fiber in order to produce high-quality fiber precursors for construction, paper, and packaging applications in the future.
