1. Work Package – Peatland Restoration and Landscape Development
In Work Package 1, all measures related to raising water levels on drained peatlands and the climate-oriented optimization of existing peatlands are brought together. The goal is to restore peatlands over the long term and establish their sustainable use.
Coordination is led by the City of Malchin through a dedicated peatland manager. Scientific support is provided by the University of Greifswald, while the “Obere Peene” Water and Soil Association contributes its expertise in water management. Landowners and regional stakeholders are continuously involved through dialogue and participatory formats.

Work Package 1.1 covers the planning, implementation, and follow-up of measures to raise water levels and restore peatlands in the Malchin region. The goal is to rewet drained peatlands while optimizing already wet peatlands for climate-friendly land management.
The process is implemented in close collaboration with landowners, agricultural stakeholders, public authorities, and other regional actors. A peatland manager from the City of Malchin coordinates activities, while the city oversees the procurement of planning and construction services. Scientific guidance is provided by the University of Greifswald and the “Obere Peene" Water and Soil association.
Implementation follows a five-step process:
- Preparation and site selection based on existing data and analyses
- Feasibility studies and preliminary planning, including technical and ecological assessments
- Approval and permitting procedures in coordination with stakeholders and authorities
- Implementation of water level restoration measures and site adaptation
- Follow-up management, including monitoring, water management, and documentation
The goal is the long-term transformation of peatland landscapes, balancing climate protection, water management, and regional land use. Over the course of the project, at least 300 hectares of peatland are to be rewetted. Implementation will take place step by step and in close coordination with all stakeholders to ensure a climate-friendly and sustainable long-term use.
