From the lab to the field: DBFZ pyrolysis cookstoves are tested in Ethiopia

The first clay-based pyrolysis cookstoves developed at DBFZ in close collaboration with our Ethiopian partners, were introduced to households in Koma Mamo (Kofele, Ethiopia) on 8–9 June 2026. The launch event was organised by the Ethiopian Clean Cooking Alliance (ECCA) together with our partners at Oromia Agricultural Research Institute (OARI).

The cookstoves distributed during the event were produced by OARI Asella together with women clay artisans from Kofele. They are now being tested by various households for last refinements before commercialisation in Oromia.
Made from locally available and recycled materials, the cookstove can be used to prepare local meals while also producing biochar. Mixed with compost (or other nutrient-rich materials) biochar-based organic fertiliser can be produced, improving soil fertility and agricultural productivity.

DBFZ experts supported OARI teams in Asella and Jimma to establish local cookstove production for the planned rollout. This will create opportunities for local value creation and skills development in the region.
