9th Expert Forum on Hydrothermal Processes
09-10 June 2026 | On-site event at DBFZ in Leipzig, Germany

The Expert Forum on Hydrothermal Processes is an established international conference series bringing together experts from research and industry. The forum covers the entire value chain of hydrothermal conversion – from feedstocks, processes and technologies to products, framework conditions and legal aspects. It aims to foster scientific exchange, highlight innovations and support the development of sustainable hydrothermal pathways.

Topics

  • Hydrothermal liquefaction towards renewable fuels and chemicals
  • Hydrothermal biomass fractionation & chemical synthesis
  • Hydrothermal pathways for value-added materials
  • Pathways for aqueous phase treatment and valorization

Target Group

  • Researchers and scientists in bioenergy, chemistry, process engineering and environmental sciences
  • Industry representatives, technology developers and plant engineers
  • Companies and practitioners working on hydrothermal technologies and applications
  • Policymakers, authorities and funding organisations
  • Consultants and project developers involved in hydrothermal value chains

1. Hydrothermal liquefaction towards renewable fuels and chemicals

Scientific Expert: Assoc. Prof. Patrick Biller (Aarhus University, Denmark)

This session invites abstract submissions on hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) as a key technology for producing renewable fuels and chemicals. Contributions from research and industry are welcome, addressing process development, product upgrading, scale-up, system integration, as well as economic and regulatory aspects. Innovative concepts, pilot and demonstration projects, and interdisciplinary perspectives are particularly encouraged.

2. Hydrothermal biomass fractionation and chemical synthesis

Scientific Expert: Prof. Andrea Kruse (University of Hohenheim, Germany)

This session calls for contributions on hydrothermal biomass fractionation and the synthesis of sustainable chemicals. Both fundamental and application-oriented submissions are welcome, covering reaction mechanisms, catalysis, process design and product development. Contributions that bridge scientific research and industrial implementation are especially encouraged.

3. Hydrothermal pathways for value-added materials

Scientific Expert: Prof. Markus Antonietti (Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Germany)

Abstract submissions are invited on hydrothermal pathways for the production of functional and value-added materials. Topics include material design, synthesis routes, structure–property relationships and emerging applications in research and industry. Both innovative fundamental studies and practice-oriented contributions with clear transfer potential are welcome.

4. Pathways for aqueous phase treatment and valorization

Scientific Expert: Andrea Salimbeni (RE-CORD, Italy)

The treatment and valorization of aqueous phases remains a major challenge in hydrothermal processes. This session invites contributions addressing technological, chemical, biological or system-based solutions. Submissions may cover treatment concepts, resource recovery, process integration as well as economic and environmental assessments.
