Soil analysis training at Batu Soil Research Center

09.08.2023

From 23.-28.07.2023, Prof. Bruno Glaser (Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg) and Betelhem Mekonnen Muluneh (DBFZ) conducted a training on fundamental soil analysis techniques at Batu Soil Research Center. The purpose of the training was to improve the technical proficiency of researchers and laboratory leaders in operating sophisticated laboratory equipment and to enable them to adhere to the appropriate soil analysis procedures. The training focused on the operation of Atomic Absorption Mass Spectrometry, Spectrophotometry, Calcimeter and laboratory procedures for analysing soil macro- and micronutrients. From the Oromia Agricultural Research Institute (IQQO), researchers working at the Batu Soil Research Center or centers at Fitche, Bedele, and Nakamte participated, joined by researchers from Jimma University. The participants expressed their full satisfaction with the training and are eager to apply and share their new knowledge. Within the ETH-Soil project, the lab course was one component of comprehensive capacity and competence building which will continue into 2026. As a result, researchers will be qualified to determine the quality of biochar-based organic fertilizer. Moreover, the effects of its application to different soils will be monitored based on sound scientific methods.

DBFZ would like to express our deepest gratitude to Batu Soil Research Center, especially the director Ato Tilahun Abera and his team, for hosting the training and for their warm welcome of colleagues from other IQQO centres and Jimma University. We thank all participants for their active engagement and constructive exchange with colleagues.
