DBFZ Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum gemeinnützige GmbH

On 28 February 2008, DBFZ was founded as a non-profit limited liability company. The institute is owned by the Federal Republic of Germany, represented by the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). The research institute was commissioned by the federal government to theoretically and practically promote the efficient use of biomass as a renewable energy source of the future within the scope of applied sciences. The scientific efforts for the establishment and integration of biomass within the series of the already existing energy sources are made by taking into account technical, ecological, economical, social as well as energy-economical aspects. All aspects of the chain of use are taken into account, i.e. from the production to the availability to the distribution of the energy to the end consumer. Besides the theoretical and practical research in the field of energetic biomass, DBFZ also prepares scientifically substantiated decision aids for the political arena. This, for example, includes the following aspects:

  • Cooperation in national and international boards and committees, e.g. for the standardisation and preparation of guidelines
  • Counselling of private and public institutions concerning all issues of the energetic use of biomass
  • Support of federal ministries in strategic issues concerning the field of “biomass/bioenergy”
  • Market observation and provision of data in the field of “biomass/bioenergy”
  • Testing and certification of solid and liquid bio fuels and installations for the provision of heat, power and possibly fuel

WASCAL

WASCAL is the West African Science Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use.

The West African Centre for Scientific Services on Climate Change and Adaptive Land Use is a large-scale research-based climate services centre mandated to help addressing the challenges of climate change in West Africa. It was established by its member countries - Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo - with the support of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), to improve the resilience of socio-ecological systems to climate change and increased volatility.

WASCAL consists of three main components:

  1. The Climate Service Department, located at the Ouagadougou Competence Centre in the capital of Burkina Faso, collects, integrates and analyses data and generates policy advice based on this data.
  2. The Research Department, also located at the Competence Centre, investigates in ways and means to generate resilience in cultural landscapes.
  3. The Capacity Building Department strengthens human capacity through its Division of Graduate Studies.

The programme ultimately aims to strengthen the research, education and policy-making capacity and competence of West African countries to address climate change and adaptive land-use issues on a scientific basis in partnership with German institutions.

The WASCAL graduate programme (Master and PhD) of the Division of Graduate Studies aims to assist West African universities to join efforts on a regional basis and maximize their capacity to improve training in the field of climate change and land use.
